Amazing Writing Tips of Killer Copies for Your Portfolio Site

Posted: 29 Oct 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Have you ever wondered what could happen if you are taking something simple and making it as gorgeous as the rose petals in your garden? Knowing some amazing writing tips for a killer copy will surely blow your visitor's mind off. The results will sprout superbly on your website.

Getting started is the hardest. Admit it, you’re a designer, yet, you never got the chance of making your portfolio as beautiful as nature. You will end up crying on your nanas' knees for making the worst copy for your portfolio ever.

Do you want your website to receive more traffic? Do you want it to increase sales?

Create an incredible copy that makes them crave for you. You're a web designer and that bizarre creativity lies within your soul. It's your time to be the best in your field by writing a seductive copy that invites like a magnet to your visitors.

There is one thing that you need to remember. Writing a copy is not all about you or your product or services; it is all about your public. Your public doesn't care about you or whatever sucks in your life; they only care about themselves and about what they think will fascinate them.

Take this advice and your frown will magically disappear. These steps will be your ticket to success.

1. Lure Your Audience with That Catchy Headline

Yep, the headline is the most important tool of every copy writing activity for a web designer. It's the portal to everything else inside your website. Without making it super attractive, no one will ever read your portfolio and you'll lose.

"Hello there!"

This is a greeting that everyone usually say when meeting a person for the first time. This is what you will do with your copy as well. All you just need to do is to call out.

Calling out to your public is one basic move that works a hundred percent positive.

"I like making great ideas happen." Now that's a very catchy line from adam.co. You see here, this is what a line that says 'come here' as well. The sound of his headline is telling people to come to his portfolio site and that's a great example when starting yours too.

Here are some questions that you would keep in mind when making your headline:

  1. So what? (What does your headline mean to your audience?)

  2. Who cares? (Why will your readers care about your headline?)

  3. What's in it for me? (How will it benefit your public?)

  4. Why are you bothering me? (Tell them that they probably want this.)

Cut the clutter in your mind. Just call out to your audience and raise your demand. That's how simple making a captivating headline.

2. Find the “What They Want’ Alley

Once you get your readers' attention, mesmerize them more. You must figure out the way into that alley. It's where you gather your information about the problem.

You need to search what's new, what's in, what's hot and how could you satisfy them. Find the weaknesses of your public; it's one strategy that you can use. Tell them that your portfolio would benefit them a lot.

Write in a way that you're telling them the feedback of those people who already bought your product or services. Give them proof that your product or services is reliable. Most importantly, make them TRUST you.

3. Solve Their Problems

You don't have to be a mathematician here. All you just need is to solve the problem without adding complicated numbers to your copy. When you already find what your public needs, it's your time to open the present.

Tell your audience the benefits of your unique portfolio, something that is not found in others. Discredit other possible solutions and focus on changing their mindset on what you offer. That means make your offer stand out.

It will be more awesome if you also fascinate them with your great ideas that will totally rock their world. If you happen to understand your market, you can totally pull this trigger off.

It's easy. You just need to make them want YOU.

4. Tell Them That You Discovered the Charm

Do you like telling secrets to your best friend? Well, visualize the market as your best friend when you write your copy. You must tell them that you discovered a solution to what they need.

How?

  • Explain the simplicity
  • Provide it the fast way
  • Show your credentials
  • Detail the benefits
  • Get social proofs like testimonials

Write as if you uncovered that mermaids are real. Address as if you found a new discovery. Tell things on all matters that will grant the wish of your audience.

Now, that you have provided the solution to your market. Your copy must be as perfect and colorful as the rainbow now.

5. Bring Them to the Counter

You are now the awesome copy god from this moment on. Now that you have created your catchy headline, figured out what they want, solved their problem and told them your solution, this is the point where you make your offer and name your price.

Tell them how they can get it. Close the deal and you’re done.

Well, that's it folks. You have made a copy without any hassle at this juncture.

Congratulations to you.

Your portfolio will be exquisite because of your copy. I'm sure you will be making the killer copies of all time because of these steps. Just always remember these simple steps and you’re on your way to victory.

Conclusion

You are now ready to be awesome. All these steps will help you achieve best results in your copy. You don’t need to pressure yourself in creating a killer copy now, keep these steps in mind and you are ready to go.

I hope you find these steps useful for your copy. Let me know if your have more great ideas to add in making killer copies.

Improving Web Form Conversion Performance

Posted: 03 Nov 2014 02:00 AM PST

Optimizing your web forms for conversion can have a huge impact on the success of your site. Higher form-completion rates translate to improvements in key success indicators like user sign-ups, lead generations, online sales, and so on.

Some types of web forms you may want to optimize are:

  • Sign-up forms
  • Ecommerce checkout forms
  • Email subscription forms
  • Contact forms

We know most people don’t like filling out web forms –no one wants to fill out a web form if they don’t have to — and so we need to use all the tricks in the book to compel our users to interface with our forms.

In this article, we will discuss some research-backed suggestions for improving the conversion-rate performance of your web forms.

Reduce the Number of Form Fields

The amount of time it might take to fill out a web form can have a big impact on a person’s desire to interface it. The easiest way to shorten the time required to complete a web form is simply to lower the amount of data the user has to provide. Limit the data you collect to ones that are absolutely essential.

A case study published by web development firm Imaginary Landscape reports that when the amount of form fields in their site’s contact form was reduced from 11 to only four, the number of web form submissions increased by 140%.

Redesigned Contact Form

Redesigned Contact Form

In the redesigned contact form, they stopped asking users for their street address, fax number, preferred contact method, and "How did you hear about us?" because, presumably, these were not critical information to know during their first contact with potential project clients. The information can always be asked later on if the web development project were to actually move forward.

Place Labels on Top of Input Fields

Top-, right- or left-aligned labels — which is best?

A good option is top-left-aligned labels. Positioning the labels in this manner might be better than your other options because users can read and see the label and its respective input field in a single eye-fixation.

This eye-tracking study conducted by UX Matters shows that when the labels are at the top of input fields and flush-left of the input fields, there were fewer eye-fixations, an indication that the web form is more readable when laid out this way.

In contrast, putting the labels beside their input fields (as shown in the images below) can cause our eyes to make two fixations instead of just one, essentially doubling the effort needed to read the contents of the web form:

Improve the Visual Scale of Calls-to-Action

The position of elements in the visual hierarchy of a web form can play a large part in its conversion-rate performance.

A landing page optimization case study by WiderFunnel, a marketing company specializing in conversion optimization, reported a 32.5% conversion-rate increase in a landing page they were working on for SAP (a large, multinational software corporation). In the landing page, SAP offered a free download of their software after filling out a web form. The web form’s conversion rate was improved significantly just by placing a large, orange call-to-action (CTA) button on the page.

Variation A — the one with the large, orange button near the top of the web page — increased conversions the highest.

Variation B, which displayed the web form the user needed to be fill out and which had the same large, orange button at the bottom of the web page, still increased conversion-rate performance by 17% compared to the original landing page design.

The results of the case study suggest that the size and visibility of your call-to-action can improve web-form-submission rates.

Optimize the Wording of Labels

In a case study discussed in this article, a split test on the landing page of the Unbounce.com software was conducted.

After reviewing the page, Unbounce decided it would be better to make the call-to-action button text more aligned with their users.

The only change they made was to update a word in the button’s text, changing the word "your" to "my". The original call-to-action button was worded "Start your 30 day free trial" while the redesigned button said "Start my 30 day free trial".

After running the split test for three weeks, the text "Start my free 30 day trial" had increased the click-through rate to the sign-up web form page by 90%.

Increase Form Friction to Improve Submission Quality

In some instances, you may not want to increase your web form’s conversion rate. Sometimes, your main focus is on optimizing the quality of the form submissions, even if it means a reduction in form submissions. This may be due to the price points of your products or services; perhaps you want to get more form submissions from potential clients that meet the financial requirements needed to hire your company. In these types of situations, having more form conversions can lead to losses instead of gains, because you will need to spend more time and resources processing web form submissions to find ones that are a good fit for your business.

One way to improve the quality of form submissions (lead quality) is to ask people what their budget for your services is. This reduces the number of form submissions coming from users who don’t have the capital needed to work with your business, saving you time from writing project proposals and pitching to the wrong prospective clients.

A "what's your budget" web form input field.

An article published on Econsultancy discusses a case study of Kindercare where the childcare service provider was able to improve their lead quality by adding an extra form field on their site’s contact form.

Redesigned Contact Form

Both contact form designs were the same, apart from the redesigned version having a new "Comments or Questions" field.

This is what the author of the article said about the Kindercare results: "To their utter surprise, conversions remained stable. There was no reduction in leads generated from the longer form! Plus, the sales team reported that the quality of the leads increased."
